Can you image a day when screens are not the forefront of our lives?
Two years ago, I started Seam Seer on the premise that clothing could enhance the lives of people through the intersection of fashion and technology. Technology continues to accelerate and change the way we live, work and play.
As we go into the future, the reliance on screens will diminish as we continue to develop modes of interaction with our senses. Today, we rely on screens to provide us access to the world of data. Whether it is simple tasks for communicating or work to applications that give us information / data about any topic you can think of.
Clothing is the "fabric" of our modern day world. If we own an electronic device we most likely also own clothing. Clothing is closer to our skin than any screen could ever be. Imagine harnessing technology that is touching our skin at all times and enhances our life in an exponential number of ways. With the intersection of nanotechnology, IoT and machine learning we could manufacture clothing that could communicate with us in ways we still haven't imagined.
At the simplest level clothing can monitor all our vital stats. Today, there are many apps that do that especially in the fitness realm. In the future, not only does the clothing monitor you but also communicates with you to optimize your body. It can monitor your water intake and remind you to drink water when it can feel the moisture in your body is diminishing. It can adjust the temperature of your clothing while you sleep to put in the right REM cycles. The clothing starts to also let you know optimum times to sleep and wakes you up to keep you refreshed. In a lot of applications today we get a lot of data that we then have to manually analyze to decide what changes we need to make. In the future, the clothing will make adjustments according to your personal body to help you optimize your day.
In the case of an emergency (especially if someone is alone - which is another trending topic in our world today. An article for another time), the clothing can notify emergency personnel before or as something is happening. Saving seconds if not minutes of informing a doctor the location and vita stats on an individual. Doctors can also take telemedicine to another level if the patients data is being uploaded into the cloud on a regular basis so that the Dr. can access it from anywhere. Clothing can take temperature, heart rates, weight and other stats that are important.
We will also be able to interact with others through our clothing. It could be visual cues such as colours to showcase our moods or it could transfer data from person to person based on the situation / conversation.
Clothing should also be fashionable and one way to do that would be to allow individuals to manipulate clothing that is enhancing their lives. Nanotechnology would allow you to design and redesign clothing to fit your mood, your environment, your situation and your style.
This is just one little snowflake of an idea on how clothing integrated with technology will enhance our lives in the future but more importantly become another mode of interaction beyond screens. There are a billion possibilities of how fashion can enhance our lives once the technology is integrated together.
